In a season marking 100 years of the Promenade Concerts, tonight's has a special significance. It is being given as a tribute to Sir Henry Wood, founder-conductor of the Proms, who died 50 years ago today. All four pieces being performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra have special associations with Sir Henry, as the conductor, Andrew Davis, will explain from the platform.
At the concert's heart is the Serenade to Music which Vaughan Williams wrote in 1938 to celebrate Wood's 50 years as a conductor. It features 166 outstanding soloists, tonight including Heather Harper, Yvonne Minton, Robert Tear and Thomas Allen.
Soprano Heather Harper says: "I've been retired for four years now but I was particularly asked to return for this hundredth season because the Proms were so important to me. It will certainly be special to join so many fine singers for Vaughan Williams's glorious Serenade."
The concert begins with the Funeral March from Grama and Diarmid, dedicated to Wood by Elgar, and Schoenberg's Five Orchestra Pieces, which received their world premiere at the Proms in 1912 under Wood's baton.
In the interval there is a film about the life of Henry Wood, and after it a performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, the last work he conducted before his death in 1944. The concert is introduced by Richard Baker.
