Allergic to the 20th Century A debilitating and sometimes fatal condition, asthma has reached epidemic proportions in the western world and is now increasing in the developing world. The reason for this sudden rise is still puzzling scientists, but it appears that people are allergic to something in the 20th-century lifestyle. The latest scientific research revealed by Horizon indicates that we all have a short "window" in our lives when we are most vulnerable to becoming asthmatic. If we can reduce the risks of becoming sensitised then, we could improve our chances of escaping the epidemic. Producer John Groom
