London Zoo - an Endangered Species
Will next week's bank holiday be the last one for London Zoo?
The most famous zoo in the world is now more endangered than the rare species it houses, and is due to close at the end of September. After decades of brinkmanship, the government has refused to bail the zoo out of its latest financial crisis, and the visiting public has stopped visiting. The keepers believe the only way to get them back - and save the zoo - is to market its internationally famous conservation credentials and to highlight the valuable captive-breeding and research work it has done. In a desperate race against time, the search has begun for a survival plan.
In this special report, Nature goes behind the scenes during the most crucial period in the zoo's long history to investigate accusations of bad management and financial incompetence, and to ask whether the zoo has any future beyond the end of next month.
