One summer evening in 1976, Gary Gilmore shot dead a petrol station attendant. The next night he killed the manager of a motel. From his prison cell in Utah he demanded to be executed by firing squad.

Gary Gilmore is released on parole from federal prison in Illinois and joins his cousin Brenda Nicol in Provo,
Utah. After a spell working for his uncle Vem Damico , he changes jobs and meets Nicole Baker , an attractive 19-year-old mother of two. Falling in love, they begin a tempestuous relationship that leads to impossible tensions on both sides.
