Live from Berlin.
The Philharmonie is the magnificent setting for tonight's concert. Built as the centrepiece of Berlin's cultural district, it is the permanent home of one of the world's great orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic.
Their music director for life,
Herbert von Karajan , has made a regular feature of popular concerts for New Year's Eve. Karajan has encouraged young prodigies at the start of their careers and tonight the 16-year-old Russian Yevgeny Kissin is playing what is probably the most popular concerto ever written, TCHAIKOVSKY'S First Piano Concerto. The concert also includes a work written by PROKOFIEV when he, too, was at the beginning of his career - the Classical Symphony.

Narrated by Tony Soper.
On Alafia Banks in Tampa
Bay, Florida, live 20,000 birds of 18 different kinds. Most are busy nesting - brown pelicans and double-crested cormorants on the tree tops, snowy egrets, reddish egrets and tricoloured herons just below the canopy with white ibis and roseate spoonbills well under cover.
This programme concentrates on the activities over just a few days in mid-April. It's a scene of bustle and colour as the birds court, build nests and tend their chicks. Photography IAN STACEY Sound BOB LASSETER

David and Linda Howard are a perfect couple - good jobs, two cars and a great house. But when David is passed over for promotion he sees the chance to break away from the yuppie treadmill and return to the land.
