Dr Anthony Clare in conversation with John Stonehouse
'I was a sham because I was pursuing what is now quite clear to me was a total myth, and 1 became more and more of a sham the more I succeeded in my political work. And I didn't realise it until it hit me like a thunderbolt that all this was false. And what I had been all those years was an actor, a prop on this political stage, and I had lost myself in the process.'

Less than one hour's plane ride from J.R.'s home town, Dallas, there is the most unusual airforce in the world. Nearly 100 bombers and fighters from World War H wait in readiness for the scramble that will never come; they form the Ghost
Squadron of the Confederate Air Force. Under their commander, Col Jethro E. Culpeper, the 7,000 colonels
- there are no other ranks - keep their aerial armada in the skies over Texas, 'to perpetuate the spirit that kept the world free'.
Every October, the airforce puts on its show of strength at command HQ.
As the Heinkels and Messerschmitts, Spitfires and Mustangs, Liberators and Flying Fortresses take to the skies, the colonels remind the world again of a time when 'America was great'. (R)

A Chronicle of Life Outside the Law
An Open Space special
The Border Patrol see them as targets in an endless game of cat and mouse. The Californians see them as an endless supply of cheap labour. But Louis Hock saw them for what they are - poor Mexicans seduced by the rich society across the border. He spent three years living among a group of Mexican 'illegals' in San Diego - recording their lives, their hopes and their repeated deportations: 'I have become a witness to an odyssey, an odyssey of millions.'
Produced and directed by LOUIS HOCK
The British nuclear industry is at a watershed. Never has a major industry so depended on public opinion for its survival.
As the Government postpones awkward decisions about power stations and nuclear waste, public fears about the safety of a nuclear future have been aggravated by the accident at Chernobyl. The industry feels the media dramatise the negative.
Anti-nuclear groups think things are moving their way. The war of words is fought in advertising campaigns with only opinion polls to point to victory or defeat.
Tonight Peter Taylor asks who the public trusts and what will turn the tide of our opinion for or against a nuclear future - and we have our own poll to test against the opinions of Brass Tacks viewers.
