The 80th birthday of Britain's foremost composer, Sir
Michael Tippett , has been marked with celebrations around the world. Perhaps the most revealing tribute took place this summer at the Malvern Festival. This year the Festival, usually noted for its patronage of Elgar, devoted the majority of its programme to the works of Tippett. BBC cameras spent the week at Malvern with Sir Michael and filmed him at work on the interpretation of his own music and Elgar's Introduction and Allegro. Tippett at 80 reveals a vigorous and delightful absorption in every aspect of music making, and this film is a unique record of his reflections on Elgar as well as his thoughts on interpretation, style and technique in the performance of his own music.

Reflections on 20 years of reform and reaction in the Roman Catholic Church. When, in 1962, Pope John XXIII promised to throw wide the Vatican windows and let in some fresh air, he blew the dust off a slumbering church. In December 1965 the Second Vatican Council, which he inspired, concluded its business. In three years it had upturned centuries of faith, tradition, authority. The rulebook has been torn up, and for many Catholics the faith could never be the same again.
Now John Paul II has summoned his bishops to Rome to re-assess the impact of the last 20 years of upheaval. From the high Andes of Peru to the streets of Skelmersdale New Town, this documentary explores what Catholicism now means for the priests and parishioners outside those Vatican windows.

The Lombard RAC Rally, which starts tomorrow and finishes on Thursday, is one of the toughest in the rallying calendar - over 2,200 miles, of which 600 are driven flat out through the mud roads and gravel of Britain's forests. Starting tonight with a preview, BBC2's Top Gear team is geared up over the next five days to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage ever of the rally. From 8 o'clock tomorrow morning drivers and their navigators get barely one night's rest before the finish at 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon.
WILLIAM WOOLLARD and SUE BAKER meet the drivers, look at their cars and consider the hazards ahead in this gruelling international event. Director BRIAN STRACHAN Producer PHILIP FRANKLIN BBC Pebble Mill
