The umbrella doesn't only make an appearance in British summertime. As this award-winning documentary illustrates, the umbrella has an important role to play elsewhere. It is discovered hoisted above jazz funerals in New Orleans, Queens in Ghana, pagodas in Bali, in the bazaars of Nepal, in Hollywood musicals, and on the first trip to the moon.

A two-part documentary on design and how it shapes the world we live in. 1: Design in a Cold Climate Britain has a vigorous tradition of design. Men like William Morris shaped it, the 1951 Festival of Britain celebrated it. In the 60s we led the world in pop, fashion and graphic design. The Habitat look, created by Sir Terence Conran , has transformed the Way people live, from London to Paris and New York. In spite of the fact that once we designed for the world, at home we just don't seem to take design seriously. Until recently industry, designers, even government, haven't seen the need to get together. The price is economic and environmental failure. This first programme unravels the tangled story - the conflict, the rewards, the Penalties - and asks: What is 'good design'? Who is to say? Why do we need it? with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh The Prime Minister Sir Terence Conran Kenneth Grange David Mellor , MP Eduardo Paolozzi and Sergio Pininfarina
