Beyond the Dragon Mouth Shiva Naipaul in Trinidad In 1982 Shiva Naipaul returned, after 18 years, to his native Trinidad. His family came from India to provide indentured labour on the sugar-cane plantations of Caroni - the island's rural heartland. Today, like many families in Trinidad, they enjoy the benefits of an oil economy. But the prosperity is shallow, and Naipaul had grave doubts about the economic, political and cultural future of the island. Shiva Naipaul died recently at the tragically young age of 40. One of the most promising writers of his generation he completed three novels; Fireflies, The Chip-Chip
Gatherers and A Hot Country. Film editor MICHAEL JACKSON Producer ADAM LOW (R)

BBC2 Invitation Pairs Crown Green Bowling Tournament The Final
With crown green's top 32 pairings now reduced to just two, this evening's final decides just who takes the lion's share of the record E7,200 in prize money; the winners collecting E2,000 and the Top Crown Trophy.
A particularly challenging green has seen some hotly-favoured pairings founder and ensured that a closely-contested final will see a new partnership adding their names to the list of previous winners. Introduced by Richard Duckenfield from the GEC Club, Stretford, Manchester.

starring Lance Kerwin with Brian Keith Michael Landon
John Curtis became one of America's finest athletes, gaining success as an Olympic gold medallist, yet his childhood was one of loneliness and humiliation. This story, based on his autobiography, tells of John's withdrawal from his family and friends because of his chronic incontinence. His sympathetic father proved too weak to help him and his mother publicly shamed him. As the result of his loneliness John trained continually as an athlete and eventually became a hero to the people he was afraid of. Screenplay, produced and directed by MICHAEL LANDON
