Esther Rantzen reports on 24 hours in the life of London Zoo. This small corner of Regent's Park has become a treasure trove of some of the world's rarest animals. Each day there are moments of comedy and drama while vets and keepers struggle to keep exotic creatures alive and happy. A rare antelope is injured, an orphan chimp needs bottle-feeding, behind the scenes scientists breed test-tube marmosets and a giraffe is parcelled up for a long journey.

Tonight's film follows the animals' private lives, as well as their public ones, from dawn to night-fall.

Far from Home
The advent of the Third Reich in January 1933 led to an exodus of Jewish and Socialist refugees who were unable to continue their careers in the country in which they had been born because of religious and political persecution. Refugees with British guarantors managed to find work here, and their contribution to learning in Britain in the 30s was invaluable. As Hitler moved into Austria, the British government relaxed some of the rules governing immigration, and more refugees were able to settle here in a more tolerant society. By the time of the outbreak of war in September 1939, 55,000 immigrants had been admitted to Britain from Fascist Germany, Austria and Czecho slovakia.
