' Mount Everest is great and beautiful. Marvellously built; majestic, terrible.' So wrote one of the first climbers to stand beneath the peak of the highest mountain in the world. These early pioneers were to get within 1,700 feet of the summit and return with a classic film of early mountaineering, but Everest remained inviolate for another 11 years, and success when it came, was limited to the air.
Wings Over Everest (1933) tells the amazing story of that perilous pioneering flight just 50 years ago.
As the aircraft approached Everest, ' the crest came up to meet us ... I wondered whether the tail skid would strike the summit ... but we cleared it by just a hairs breadth ...' Then, for the first time man looked down on the roof of the world.
