A Life on the Move
Joan Sutherland 's voice is familiar to millions through her numerous recordings and her international appearances. Next Saturday, her performance in the title role of Donizetti's opera Lucrezia Borgia will be televised live from the Royal Opera House.
Tonight's film follows Joan Suther land and her husband, conductor Richard Bonynge , over a year in their busy life together, continually on the move between performances, recordings and concert appearances. We go behind the scenes at the Met and Sydney Opera House, on tour in Japan and Korea, and watch recording sessions in London and at the Bonynges' home in Switzerland.
The film includes excerpts from Australian Opera's productions of Norma, La Traviata and The Merry Widow; a Wagner recording session; and a variety of songs in recital and in rehearsal.

A Personal Statement by Milton Friedman

' Inflation is the inevitable result when the quantity of money in circulation rises more rapidly than the quantity of goods and services produced', says PROFESSOR FRIEDMAN. A film about Whitechapel with Arnold Wesker and William Fishman
' It's a trap, the East End, to be cosy and sentimental.... being romantic, yes! That's looking back with love. But sentimentality-that's looking back with dishonesty.'
That was how playwright Arnold Wesker wrote about London's Whitechapel. Since he left the place in 1940 it has changed almost beyond recognition. At the turn of the century, the little streets to the North and East of Aldgate tube station were the hub of London's immigrant Jewish community. Now the Kosher butchers and synagogues have become Halal grocers and mosques. But one thing doesn't change. Ever since the French
Huguenots landed there in the 1750s, the East End has nurtured migrants and strangers.
This film is an impressionistic portrait of East London's immigrant life, filmed in the prayer houses and sweatshops, the cafes and streets of Spitalfields. Most of all it evokes the exiles' dream of a promised land, free from discrimination and poverty, which has kept immigrant life alive over 300 years.
