Tonight, from BBC Northern Ireland: A Chance to Live
The current affairs programme Spotlight investigates the reasons why so many babies in Northern Ireland die or are handicapped because of difficulties at birth. The statistics are among the worst in Europe and North America, but it's estimated between a third and a half of those babies could be saved if all known medical knowledge was applied. Reporter Gavin Esler talks to parents whose children were handicapped at birth and to doctors who have campaigned for a radical improvement in Northern Ireland's maternity services.
