Harold and Jack Manning, father and son, travel miles across the sands of Morecambe Bay to fish dangerously before the incoming tide overtakes them. Their town is Flookburgh, originally a tenth-century Viking settlement, now the centre of the local potted-shrimp industry.
The Mannings are musical: Harold conducts a local choir and Jack plays first cornet in the Flookburgh Silver Band.
