An Element of Mystery
Mercury - panacea or poison? Horizon looks at the sources, uses and properties of this unique metal, the only one to remain liquid at room temperature, and examines its role in modern society.
Most of the world's mercury supply is produced, as it has been for centuries, in Almaden - a tiny town in Spain, where the metal drips from the rock in underground mines. But do we use it safely? If mercury vapour killed Charles II, what chance have we with our teeth full of mercury-based amalgam and the metal's use in the manufacture of margarine, cleaning fluids and thermometers, as well as widespread use in industry?
This programme tells the truth behind the mercury-in-tuna-fish scare, and shows how a recent piece of scientific detective work could save the lives of thousands. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
