The first of three new films from Heinz Sielmann
Narrated by David Attenborough
One night 19 years ago, the BBC showed a short black and white film about woodpeckers. Immediately, the switchboard at the Lime Grove studios was jammed with congratulatory calls to its maker, a German film director previously unknown in this country.
Since then, Heinz Sielmann has made many films, both for cinema and television, but he has always wanted to go back to his 'old friends the woodpeckers,' and make a full length film about them in colour.
To do so has taken him two years, but tonight, with Sielmann, you can look inside the tree-trunk homes of the various woodpeckers and see the secrets of their life in the forests near his home in Munich.
Produced in co-operation with Norddeutscher Rundfunk
