Six films of a jaunt in the sun
'If you've never painted a thing in your life I don't think you could live here for long without having a dab.'
The road to Veracruz from the central tableland of Mexico drops 7,000 feet in its 250 miles. It takes us through romantic Indian villages and lazy colonial towns; past Pico de Orizaba, one of the highest mountains on the American continent, through the lush tropical region of Fortin, where Johnny takes an unforgettable swim, to the salty bustle of Veracruz and the island fortress of San Juan de Ulua, built by the Spaniards in the 16th century.

This week: Alive and Well and Living in Malta
Malta is a place in the sun where it is still possible to live well, if not extravagantly, on £1,000 a year. For those who lived and worked in what were once called our colonies, Malta can seem the nearest place to home where the sun still does shine. Fifty years ago they would, perhaps, have been destined to govern outposts of our Empire. Today there is no Empire, so their destiny is Malta where, for some of them at least, the setting sun of Imperial grandeur still lingers nostalgically.
