A Personal History of the United States in 13 parts written and narrated by Alistair Cooke.

Peace with Britain left 13 very independent colonies in search of a national identity. They found it in Philadelphia in 1787. Here, and in Washington and in Virginia, Alistair Cooke looks into the Constitution they created and the ways in which men like Thomas Jefferson tried to protect the liberty of the individual.
But in the foothills of the Appalachians the frontiersmen were already moving west. Grass-roots democracy would soon transform the orderly plans of the Founding Fathers.
