In this tribute to the French and Spanish adventurers who were the first Europeans to explore North America, Alistair Cooke retraces the epic journeys of Coronado in 1540 across the deserts of the south-west. The Spanish were lured on by their desire for gold, but in the north, the French were ranging the forests for furs. They discovered the great central waterways, and founded the port of New Orleans. Both nations were out to exploit the new found land, and it was left to the English to settle it.
