Many children are today taught in ways entirely different from their parents - so different that there is sometimes concern about falling standards and lack of discipline.

Tonight, Horizon looks at some of these changes and the reasoning behind them. Much of this so-called 'child-centred' approach is based on the implications of the work of Professor Jean Piaget. The programme shows his work and some fascinating attempts to revise the teaching of maths, science, music and the arts.

Christopher Searle, the London teacher suspended earlier this year for publishing his pupils' poems, explains his method and some of his students take part. He is one example of a teacher who is attempting to implement child-centred methods in an educational priority area. But just how well understood are the theories and practice that lie behind some of these changes? And how good is the teacher training which should support them?
