We spend millions in keeping out the sea, particularly in places where people should never have chosen to live. We are Canutes, and occasionally suffer the consequences, as in the floods of 1953. We are perpetually threatened by the sea, and yet have no national plan whatsoever for dealing with the invader.
The Britain we live in is quite a different shape to all its former outlines and, despite our money, it will continue to change, inexorably, unceasingly.
