What is your dream? Three cars and a yacht in your garage, a heated pool in your garden and six months' holiday a year? Is that the world you hope to create for your children? It could happen if we continue to invent and develop the new ideas that make us rich, and if we don't underrate the achievements of our present-day world.
Filmed from the air the programme traces the rise of industry from early beginnings - the monks' forge of Kirkstall Abbey, the weavers' village of Worstead. The helicopter flies low among the Rhondda pit-heads, races with Lotus cars, hovers by a jump-jet. Below it models leap for a photocall, and Princess Anne launches the largest ship built in Britain.

As Toscanini said, "Any asino can conduct, but to make music... eh? Is difficile". To be a conductor is the dream of many and there is no shortage of hopeful candidates. But the orchestral conductor's art remains something of a mystery. Just what he does and how he obtains his results can be unknown factors even to regular concertgoers.
Thanks in part to rare archive film, we see in action some of the important figures of the earlier part of this century - the period generally called the Golden Age of conductors.
Eye-witness accounts of the days before film are also used to show how and why conducting started in the first place.

In the autumn of 1968 at the Newmarket Sales nearly £4 million was spent in the difficult search for good racehorses. A Year in the Life follows a horse through its crucial first year of training. Guy Harwood, its trainer, must justify the owner's outlay by producing a winner.
After a year of effort Race Day arrives and everyone is hopeful. The trainer expects a place, the owner has laid out a big bet, but the bookies are not so sure he will win because they have made King Kathie 100/7.
