A series of films from all over the world about our astonishing planet and the creatures that live on it.

Commentary by Anthony Smith.
America realised in time that her wild places were disappearing under the pressure of civilisation. Parks and wildlife sanctuaries were established ensuring that spectacles such as magnificent herds of buffalo, the rare, beautiful Pronghorn Antelopes, and the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon should remain for all to see.

The architecture of sound
Possibly the greatest achievements in twentieth-century chamber music, Bartok's six string quartets possess immense qualities, both of intellect and emotion. This programme investigates their structure and shows how Bartok's imagination constantly explored new ways of achieving unity, conciseness, and subtlety.
Tonight's Workshop ends with a complete performance of the Fourth Quartet.

The Vegh String Quartet: Sandor Vegh (violin), Sandor Zoldy (violin), Georges Janzer (viola), Paul Szabo (cello)

(The Vegh String Quartet play Bartok's First Quartet on Wednesday, 10.40 p.m., on BBC-1 - not Wales)
