In exhibitions, market places, suburban streets, car show rooms, and £100-a-day hotel suites they practise their skills and take our money. But what is in it for them - apart from the commission? Why do people get more than just a living out of selling? And who are the top men, who may make a million pounds out of a single deal?

Lady Jessica, Peter's mother and Tredgold, Marlene's dad, find the barriers more difficult to cross.
