The Jenkins, penniless aristocrats, have moved in next door to the Tredgolds of Tredgold's Supermarkets. Peter Jenkins is day-dreaming in the garden one morning when Marlene steps through a gap in the fence and into his life. Lady Jessica, Peter's mother and Tredgold, Marlene's dad, find the barriers more difficult to cross.
