Today many sophisticated pieces of medical hardware are coming out of the laboratory and into the hospital, among them kidney machines, artificial hearts, and monitoring devices for coronary victims. But these machines are often very expensive and may tie up capital in the treatment of chronic illness, capital which could be used for other, perhaps equally urgent, cases.
