Donald Macleod describes how Donizetti took Paris by storm, something which led a despairing Hector Berlioz to complain of an 'invasion'.

Donald Macleod explores Donizetti's life and work, focusing on how he took Paris by storm. 

At Rossini's invitation, Donizetti previously had an opera staged at the Theatre-Italien, but his ambition was to storm that bastion of French culture, the Paris Opera, before retiring. In the event, Donizetti exceeded his goal, with productions running at all four major Parisian opera houses. It led a despairing Berlioz to complain of an 'invasion' of the city by the Italian composer.

Roger Norrington conducts his own 75th birthday concert, which features some of his favourite music performed by the OAE, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony and the Schutz Choir.

A concert celebrating the 75th birthday of conductor Roger Norrington, who has been an innovator in musical performance since the 1960s.

This special event features music in which he excels, and brings together three of the ensembles with which he is closely associated - the Schutz Choir, which he formed in the early 1960s; the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, with whom he has had a close relationship since the late 1990s; and the modern-instrument Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he is principal conductor.

Matthew Sweet sees Dame Judi Dench in an all-star production of the play Madame de Sade, about the mother-in-law and the wife of the infamous Marquis de Sade, written by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. 

Mishima is best known for having committed suicide after he led a failed right-wing coup d'etat in Japan in 1970. But this drama, written five years earlier, is possibly just as controversial. 

It explores the lives of six women involved with the notorious de Sade - at the point in his life when he was imprisoned in the Bastille for his licentious actions. The play has rarely been performed in Britain and has been newly translated from Japanese for this production.
