Donald Macleod and Gerard McBurney survey Gliere's influence and legacy.

Donald Macleod and Gerard McBurney explore Gliere's final years, focusing on his legacy to those he taught and his unfinished Violin Concerto.

Donald Macleod is joined by Russian music expert Gerard McBurney to explore Gliere's life and work, from his beginnings in Kiev to his later prominent position in Moscow as both composer and teacher.

The programme charts the end of Gliere's life, from his patriotic music composed during the Second World War - including Holiday at Ferghana - to his influence as both a composer and teacher.

There are also two contrasting concertos, including one for cello, which when first premiered was quite a scandalous affair. It was later performed again, and became the first work to be dedicated to the great cellist Rostropovich. These are followed by Gliere's unfinished Violin Concerto, which was completed by one of his students.

The London Mozart Players celebrate their sixtieth birthday with their Gala Extravaganza, held at Fairfield, Croydon. Founded in 1949 by violinist and conductor Harry Blech, the group has established a reputation for high quality performances not only of Mozart and his contemporaries but also the music of today.

The concert features works by Mozart as well as later romantic composers - Mendelssohn and Rossini - and also includes a Shostakovich symphony. The orchestra is joined by soloists who have had long associations with it - soprano Felicity Lott sings Mozart, violinist Isabelle van Keulen and pianist/conductor Howard Shelley.

While male workers have mostly achieved a work/leisure balance, women still struggle.

Hugh Cunningham argues that while male workers have largely won the historic battle for a work/leisure balance, women are struggling more than ever.

We talk now of a 'work/life balance', as though 'work' is something quite separate from 'life' and the meaning of both is self-evident. How have we arrived at such a way of thinking? It's hard to find answers because, while there is endless newspaper coverage of the issue, no history of the work/life balance exists. Especially for The Essay, Professor Hugh Cunningham explores the place that work has played in British lives from proto-industrialism in the C18th to post-industrialism in the C21st through five vivid chronological snapshots. Each tells the story of a particular period while shedding new light on a contemporary juggling act that causes great stress to many, if not most, people in our society.

Throughout the series Hugh Cunningham returns to two themes: the impact of contemporary consumerism on our working lives and the difference between the work/leisure balance of the past - when the work-force was mainly male- and the so-called work/life balance of today - with women most taking the strain.
