Donald Macleod explores Donizetti's life and work, focusing on his time working at the San Carlo Opera House in Naples as house composer. It was a crucial period in his career and during the 20-odd years he spent in the city, his fame spread from the heel of Italy to the Americas.

Fresh from the success at the Grammys with their disc of ballads, folk songs and spiritual melodies, Simple Gifts, the King's Singers perform tracks from their disc Romance du Soir in the studio. They perform three concerts in the UK in March 2009.

Argentinian dance show Tango Fire returns to the Peacock Theatre, London, after their success in 2007. Petroc is joined by the show's four-piece band, Quatrotango, and singer Pablo Lago.

Mark Elder conducts the Halle Orchestra in symphonies by Haydn and Mendelssohn - composers whose birth and death overlapped by just a few months in 1809 - and a cantata by Berlioz. 

Berlioz's account of Cleopatra's final hours was one of his infamous public failures - written as a competition entry for the Prix de Rome, his third of four attempts to gain recognition from the musical establishment.

Haydn's Symphony No 48, with its pomp and splendour, was a fitting piece to be performed in Esterhazy on the occasion of a visit from the Empress Maria Theresia, while Mendelssohn's Third Symphony, evoking the spirit of Scottish folk melodies, was inspired by the composer's visit to Scotland.

Jez Nelson presents a selection of previously un-broadcast music recorded for the show, including pieces from Herbie Hancock's 2008 London Jazz Festival gig, featuring Benin guitarist Lionel Loueke. Taking centre stage with two of his own compositions, Seven Teens and Virgin Forest, Loueke performs both guitar and baritone solos. The set features Herbie Hancock (piano), Terence Blanchard (trumpet), Gregoire Maret (harmonica), James Genus (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums).
