Donald Macleod explores Donizetti's problems with censorship, which finally drove him to abandon Naples for Paris. Includes excerpts from Lucrezia Borgia, Maria Stuarda and Poliuto.

Donald Macleod explores Donizetti's life and work, focusing on the bane of the composer's Italian career - censorship. Lucrezia Borgia alarmed the censors with its five on-stage deaths and unflattering depiction of a pope's daughter. Maria Stuarda offended the King of Naples because it represented royalty in an unflattering light, with two queens on stage, one of them calling the other 'vile bastard'. Poliuto, passed as fit for public consumption by the censors, was nonetheless banned by the king because of its religious subject-matter. The effect was to drive Donizetti to abandon Naples for Paris.

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia in music from Vienna - Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht and Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony. Plus music by composers who influenced Purcell.

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in works centring on the city of Vienna, from 1900 to 1935.

The programme features works by Schoenberg and Zemlinsky, who were were close friends: Schoenberg composed his seminal piece Verklarte Nacht in 1899 while on holiday with Zemlinsky and Zemlinsky's sister Mathilde, who became Schoenberg's first wife in 1906. Based on a series of love poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, Zemlinsky's work was originally written for string sextet and he then arranged it for string orchestra some years later. Both pieces express the same sense of yearning common to much of the art of the time.

Bidisha explores the origins of magic books, from Ancient Egypt and medieval sorcery up to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first ever study to tell the complete history is about to be published by Owen Davies, a specialist in modern and contemporary magic. His book traces magical literature through Kabbalah, Scandinavian witchcraft and post-war German occultism. Bidisha and guests discuss how has it was possible for magic books to survive the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment and the industrial revolution.
