West Cork Chamber Music Festival
4/4. Sean Rafferty presents the last programme from this year's festival. Shostakovich composed his moving song cycle From Jewish Folk Poetry in 1948, the same year as his condemnation at the hands of the Union of Composers and Andrei Zhdanov. The texts are from a collection of Russian translations of Jewish lyrics, mostly originally in Yiddish but some Hebrew or Russian; the melodies are in the style of the "klezmer" music Shostakovich loved. An elegiac setting of the words of Walt Whitman, recalling his experience as a nurse in the American Civil War, is paired with a shimmering tribute to the composer's own father. And Adams's wildest dream is realised in his zany depiction of a huge tanker rising skywards from San Francisco Bay in Harmonielehre. Presented by Sarah Walker.
