BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Live from the Royal Albert Hall , London. The sound of the sea runs deep through Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa 's psyche - he sees tonight's piece not only as a musical illustration of the eternal cycle of water, but also as a metaphor for the human life-cycle. Nature also creeps into Mahler's Wayfaring songs, and Mahler is one of several composers quoted in Shostakovich's quirky, death-haunted final symphony. Presented by Louise Fryer.
Christopher Maltman (baritone), BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conductor Kazushi Ono
Toshio Hosokawa Circulating Ocean (first UK performance)
Mahler Liedereines fahrenden Cesellen
7.45 Twenty Minutes: The Adverb
Ian McMillan continues the series of literary performances recorded in front of an audience at Cadogan Hall. This week novelist Hanif Kureishi presents a selection of his favourite writings on music, and some of his own, too.
8.05 Shostakovich Symphony No 15
