Today Michael Berkeley meets actor Tim Pigott-Smith, most famous for his TV roles as loathsome authority figures - the sadistic colonel in The Jewel and the Crown and bent copper DI Vickers in The Vice. He's also played a wide range of roles - including perfectly reasonable people - on stage with the RSC and the National Theatre. His musical passions include songs by Mahler, Georges Brassens and the Beatles, Bach's Goldberg Variations, a tango by Astor Piazzolla and Sibelius's Violin Concerto.

Detour Ahead. 4: Sonny Sharrock
Charles Shaar Murray concludes his series on influential jazz guitarists. Sonny Sharrock was one of the greatest electric guitarists in the avant-garde field, developing in the 1960s a technique on the guitar equivalent to the innovations being made by saxophonists such as Albert Ayier and John Coltrane.

Tristan und Isolde
John Christie originally founded the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1934 with the intention of putting on Wagner operas on a regular basis, but in the event his new opera house was considered too small.
Sixty-nine years later, in his second opera house, his dream has finally been realised as Wagner comes to Glyndebourne for the first time. The tragic love story is given a new production by German director Nikolaus Lehnhoff. Donald Macleod introduces the performance and meets some of the participants.

Oxford Contemporary Music: Britten Sinfonla
Tom Service talks to John Woolrich about curatingthe Britten Sinfonia 's recent
Contemporary Music Network tour, and introduces a concert recorded as part of Oxford Contemporary Music, celebrating John Zorn 's 50th birthday with two contrasting works, Angelus Novus and For Your Eyes Only, the latter showing the huge influence that cartoon music has had on Zorn's output. Also on the bill are John Adams 's wry take on Schoenberg in his
Chamber Symphony and John Woolrich 's Music from a House of Crossed Desires, a fantasy drawn from his 1995 opera.
