2: Heroics. The 1930s was the decade that saw Khachaturian's graduation and rise to musical prominence. He developed a unique combination of heroic virtuosity, in tune with Socialist Realism, and free-flowing rhapsody, in tune with his
Armenian origins. The combination found its noblest expression in three demanding but popular concertos.

Another chance to hear a recital of music for brass from the Italian Renaissance, given at Cardiff Castle's banqueting hall last year by the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, directed from the keyboard by Robert Howarth. Piotr Anderszewski at the Wigmore
