Live from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Piers Burton-Page introduces an international cast in a semi-staged performance of Verdi's final masterpiece. Verdi and his librettist Boito drew on the comic tale of the fat knight as portrayed in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, where Falstaff is teased for imagining himself as an irresistible lover.

Body fat and the social, health and lifestyle issues it raises are fashionable subject matters today but they are hardly new concepts: Falstaff's monumental stature is celebrated in the Shakespearean canon and in several operas. Diane Purkiss explores some of the Bard's references to fat.

BBC Philharmonic - Gerard Brophy at 60 The first of two editions highlighting recent Australian music. Sarah Walker presents a concert given by the BBC Philharmonic with guitarist Craig Ogden , conducted by Clark Rundell , to mark Gerard Brophy 's 60th birthday. It includes the first performance of Brophy's Guitar Concerto in Blue, a BBC co-commission with Symphony Australia. Also on the bill are Brophy's Matho and Colour red....your mouth ... heart, and Mary Finsterer 's Sequi, played by the Arditti Quartet.
And, in the final report from Hear and Now's Cut and Splice Festival in London, Robert Worby introduces soundscapes created by Francisco Lopez , Gregg Wagstaff and Chris Watson.
