Lesley Chamberlain explores the emigres' lives, visits the places the Russians made their own, looks for their ghosts and charts the survival of ideas now urgent once again after the fall of Communism.

Angel Horn, Jazz trumpeter and flugel-horn player Shake Keane was given a trumpet at the age of six by his dad. Shake was also a dab hand at poems, photography and thinking. But itdidn 'tall come together. Before he died, thousands of miles away from his beloved and hated St Vincent , he begged a friend to "throw me in the Norwegian Sea."
