By Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , translated by Robert David MacDonald. This relatively little-known work, dating from 1774, tells of the playwright
Beaumarchais arriving in Spain to avenge his younger sister Marie, whose abandonment by her betrothed, the writer Clavigo, has endangered her reputation as well as her health. It is a romantic tragedy based on the fallibility of man, and an early product of the Romantic movement.
