A concert given at the Barbican Hall on Saturday night. Schoenberg's late-Romantic work Verklarte Nacht, is performed here in its string orchestra version of 1917. Transfigured Night began life as a string sextet and was first performed in 1903. Brahms'sgreat piano concerto of 1878-81, with soloist Garrick Ohlsson , follows the first London performance of a new symphony by an American composer. Aaron Jay Kernis , born in 1960, draws on the musical languages of the eighties and nineties to compose music which bursts with rich poetic imagery and brilliant instrumental colour. His second symphony takes much of its emotion from the horrific tragedies of the recent Gulf War. Its three movements are entitled Alarm, Air/Ground and Barricade.
