Every summer the delightful town of La Jolla in southern California plays host to one of America's leading chamber music festivals. With its idyllic Pacific setting and against a background of beached sea lions and diving pelicans, Summer Fest La Jolla attracts some of today's leading musicians, who come together for three weeks in August. In summer 2000 Helen Wallace travelled to La Jolla and now presents the first of five programmes this week in which she talks to the participants and plays some of the highlights of a festival that has been described as one of musical America's best-kept secrets.
