Central Avenue Sounds: Early Days
In the first of a new series, Alyn Shipton investigates the forgotten jazz scene of Central Avenue in Los Angeles. From the twenties until the fifties, Central Avenue was the jazz capital of the West Coast. But then its theatres and clubs closed and all signs of its rich musical heritage disappeared. Historian Steve Isoardi sets the political and social background, and authors Phil Pastras and Floyd Levin look back at the pioneering music of Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and Paul Howard. And saxophonist Vi Redd remembers the lively Creole community which kept Louisiana customs alive in the West when jazz first arrived in California.

Italian heroine Isabella -feisty, intelligent and, of course, gorgeous - turns up in Algiers in a bid to rescue her lover Lindoro from the local Turkish governor Mustafa the Bey, dimwitted philanderer given to threats of impalement. The year is 1213 and an interdict from Pope Innocent proscribing any form of music in the churches of England makes a beleaguered and isolated King John realise that he has to find some kind of a sound to feed the soul of his people. What he commissions is a sound so strange that it is heard as music without music. It is An Insular Motet.
