Michael Olivertalks to
David Pountney about the challenges involved in staging Verdi's early masterpiece Nabucco, first produced at La Scala, Milan, in 1842 and currently enjoying a revival at English
National Opera. Set among the decadent splendours of ancient Babylon, its famous Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves became a powerful symbol of Italian nationalist feeling in the mid-19th century.

A journey through the literatures of Europe.

Julian Evans arrives in Italy. But rather than looking in Florence, Venice, Milan or Rome for an iconic figure in Italy's narrative tradition, his search leads him to the border city of Trieste, once the home of Italo Svevo. And from conversations with today's writers it seems that, like Svevo, the dominance of the country's Renaissance and Classical traditions has encouraged them to look away from Italy's cultural heartlands for their literary inspiration.
