Michael Berkeley's first guest of the year 2000 is theatre director John Caird, who last year directed a triumphant production of Bernstein's musical Candide at the Royal National Theatre. His previous productions at the National include Peter Pan, Chekhov's The Seagull, Bulwer-Lytton's Money and Trelawney of the Wells. His musical choices include a Chopin piano sonata, the Mozart Oboe Quartet, a Beethoven string quartet, an excerpt from Gorecki's Symphony No 3 and the finale of the National Theatre production of Candide.

William "Count" Basie, who died in 1984, was a man of few words with a famously sparse piano style. He also led one of the most significant big bands in jazz history.

Alyn Shipton sets out to discover Basie the man and his musical legacy. In the first of four programmes Basie the vaudeville and blues musician takes organ lessons from Fats Waller before joining the Territory Band of Bennie Moten. By 1936 he was leading his own band.
