Devising recital programmes is an important and well developed area of Graham Johnson 's musical life. From the first appearances of the Songmaker's Almanac the recital programme was irrevocably changed, and audiences were both challenged and entertained as never before.

Like Dante, Francesco Petrarch lived most of his life in exile. Also like Dante, his life was transformed by a chance meeting with a girl - in Petrarch's case Laura de Noves, who would inspire much of his poetry. Alfred Einstein called Petrarch "the most frequently composed poet of world literature", and, over the centuries, his verse has inspired a variety of musicians from Schubert to Liszt.
