Italian-born Muzio Clementi was a talented young musician who was "collected" by an Englishman on his grand tour of Europe and brought to Dorset, where he lived on an estate near Blandford Forum for seven years. Clementi then established himself in London first as a pianist and composer, then a music publisher and piano maker. At the age of 50, he spent eight years on the continent promoting his pianos and looking for new music to publish - including Beethoven's Emperor Concerto and Choral Fantasia. He eventually retired from business in his late seventies and lived in Lichfield and then Evesham, where he died aged 80.
