Vladimir Ashkenazy about his defection from the Soviet Union in pursuit of artistic and political freedom. He reveals his feelings on returning to Russia after 26 years in exile and describes how he coped with the harsh words said against him. The programme includes piano works by Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Musorgsky.

With Donald Macleod. The relationship between Tchaikovsky and his patron Nadezhda von Meek was based on imagination and illusion. It was maintained by correspondence, and all personal contact was deliberately avoided. It began suddenly - after Meek heard Tchaikovsky's Tempest- and ended just as unexpectedly, when she became bankrupt and had to cut off his allowance. But her support, while it lasted, gave Tchaikovsky time to create some of his greatest works. Including excerpts from:

Southampton, introduced by Paul Guinery. In this concert, given last Tuesday, a popular Haydn quartet rubs shoulders with an almost unknown one by Nielsen. The programme culminates with one of the great chamber works featuring a piano, which went through several rejected versions before reaching its final form.
