Roderick Swanston asks six leading performers of early music to reveal the personal element in their music-making.
2: Conductor Philippe Herreweghe trained as a psychiatrist before turning to full-time conducting with the choir he formed in his home town of Ghent, Belgium, in 1972, the Collegium Vocale. Since then, he has formed two other vocal and instrumental ensembles - La
Chapelle Royale and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysees - to give performances of a wide range of music from Josquln to Schoenberg, always characterised by a gentle and lovingly prepared beauty of sound. The programme includes choral music by Lassus, Schiitz, Bach and Bruckner, and excerpts from
Schumann's Symphony No 4 in D minor, Berlioz's Les Nuits d'Ete, and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.

"The perspiration and agony from which a composer suffers when hearing the sounds of his experience is the most valuable part of any training." Charles Stanford 's words, written almost 100 years ago, find an echo in the second Composers' Platform. Last October, 19 composers heard their latest music rehearsed and performed in six informal workshops led by Julian Anderson , John Casken ,
Peter Maxwell Davies , Roger Marsh and Stephen Pratt , who also introduces the first of three programmes of highlights. The music is performed by the BBC Philharmonic, the ensemble
Psappha, students from the Royal Northern College of Music, and pianist Peter Lawson. Producer Paul Hindmarsh

Continuing a six-part series telling the story of South African jazz over the last 50 years.
3: Blue Notes.Pianist, composer and arranger Chris McGregor was the son of white missionaries and grew up in the Transkei, a tribal homeland. He wanted to play jazz with the finest musicians he could find, regardless of colour and the increasing problems posed by the apartheid laws. John Fordham investigates how McGregor and his band the Blue Notes found local fame and acclaim before quitting South Africa in 1964 in search of European success.

Never before performed at the New York Met, Strauss's
"musical conversation piece", his last stage work, is an opera about opera. Kiri Te Kanawa leads the cast as the widow Countess Madeleine, trying to decide between her two rival suitors - the composer Flamand and the poet Olivier. Her indecision stands as a metaphor for the age-old operatic dilemma: which is more important, the music or the words?

The fourth of six experimental radiophonic features.
Out of the Blue. The scene is an office. Two people are sitting facing each other. An event is about to happen which will propel one of them into a drama which is unexpected, short and shocking. It is the moment when a relationship ends. People remember the dramatic turn of events which signifies redundancy. Compiled by Rex Brough

Brian Morton introduces a concert by the Ray Brown Trio. Bass player Ray Brown has been on the jazz scene for more than 50 years, and is probably best known for the decade he spent with Oscar Peterson. For the last few years, he has led his own trio. At
Edinburgh's Queen's Hall last year, the trio included pianist Benny Green and Greg Hutchison on drums. During the interval, Brian Morton talks to Ray Brown about his life in jazz.
