Richard Baker tells the stories behind 1,000 years of great music. Gustav Mahler and Alma Schindler met and married in turn-of-the-century Vienna. He discouraged her from composing, and they were together for only nine years. Over the score of his final symphony (No 10), Mahler scrawled impassioned messages to Alma, who survived him by more than half a century.

Martinu comes to life in Half-Time, a work evoking the excitement of the football terraces. On holiday in Italy in 1954, Martinu travelled to Arezzo and was deeply moved by the frescoes at the Church of San

4: Peter Levi on Claude's
Landscape with Aeneas at Delos. Using Claude's beautiful neoclassical representation of a scene from the Aeneid as a starting point, Peter Levi develops a narrative of astonishing fecundity which takes in Bardsey in North Wales, Naxos and Syria, to create a remarkable synthesis of fiction and myth.
