Sound Stories

on BBC Radio 3

Richard Baker tells the stories behind 1,000 years of great music. Gustav Mahler and Alma Schindler met and married in turn-of-the-century Vienna. He discouraged her from composing, and they were together for only nine years. Over the score of his final symphony (No 10), Mahler scrawled impassioned messages to Alma, who survived him by more than half a century.
