Michael Berkeley talks to
Peter Shaffer , one of the most distinguished British playwrights of our time, whose successes include Equus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Amadeus. His choices focus on the stage and include duets from Verdi's Otello and Rossini's La Cenerentola, and Sir John Gielgud reading the deposition scene from Shakespeare's Richard II. But there is also instrumental music by Mozart and Mendelssohn, a Handel birthday ode sung by Alfred Deller , and an excerpt from Britten's Holy Sonnets of John Donne.

Including:

Debussy Claire de Lune

BBC Singers, Stephen Betteridge
(piano), conductor Stephen Cleobury A celebration in words and music of the great figures connected with Manchester's musical life in the 1890s. In this period, the city welcomed composers and performers such as Elgar,
Paderewski and Grieg, amateur music-making flourished with glee clubs, choral festivals and adventurous concert programmes, and figures like Sir Charles Halle were putting the city on the musical map in ways which would last right up to the present day.

8.10 Unspeakable Rites
A Short History of Cannibalism The horrors of cannibalism have always been attributed to distant primitive races or mankind's own distant past. Although it figures in many important literary works from Homer to Sade and Dante to Defoe, it is always shrouded by coy rhetoric or a political message.
Claude Rawson explores the strange history of cannibalism in western literature.
