Michael Berkeley talks to
Peter Shaffer , one of the most distinguished British playwrights of our time, whose successes include Equus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Amadeus. His choices focus on the stage and include duets from Verdi's Otello and Rossini's La Cenerentola, and Sir John Gielgud reading the deposition scene from Shakespeare's Richard II. But there is also instrumental music by Mozart and Mendelssohn, a Handel birthday ode sung by Alfred Deller , and an excerpt from Britten's Holy Sonnets of John Donne.

Jeremy Nicholas ends his assessment of pianist Gyorgy Cziffra, who escaped from Hungary in 1956. Already in his mid-30s but unknown in the west, he quickly established himself as one of the foremost virtuosos of the day, although tragedy marred his final years.

With contributions from Gordon Fergus-Thompson, Michael Glover, Charles Hopkin and Bryce Morrison, he examines Cziffra's legacy, both as artist and philanthropist.

In 1995 the manuscript of Elgar's Severn Suite was put up for sale.
It is different from the much-played published version in a number of ways, not least the key. The
Williams Fairey Band, music director James Gourlay , bring the series to a close with a performance of the Severn Suite following Eigar's original manuscript.

Two days ago at the Band on the Wall in Manchester, this recently formed 21-piece orchestra gave the first performance of First Weaving by Keith Tippett, a Radio 3 commission. Geoffrey Smith introduces a recording of that performance and, during the interval, talks to Keith Tippett about his music. The first half of the concert is made up of small group performances by members of Tapestry, which includes Mark Charig (cornet), Pino Minafra (trumpet), Elton Dean (saxophones), Gianluigi Trovesi (alto sax/clarinets), Paul Dunmall (tenor sax/clarinet/bagpipes), Louis Moholo (drums) and Keith Tippett himself on piano.
