Jeremy Nicholas reviews new releases of piano music by Liszt, including Bach transcriptions from Artur Pizarro, and the first disc in Naxos's complete Liszt piano music series. He also looks at Leslie Howard's complete edition for Hyperion, which has already reached about seventy discs.

The Swiss conductor and string player August Wenzinger died last Christmas, all but forgotten. But without him, the early-music revival would still be in its infancy. Seventy years ago, he was the first to play the viola da gamba like a gambist - not a cellist - and he founded the influential Schola Cantorum in Basle.
