The Swiss conductor and string player August Wenzinger died last Christmas, all but forgotten. But without him, the early-music revival would still be in its infancy. Seventy years ago, he was the first to play the viola da gamba like a gambist - not a cellist - and he founded the influential Schola Cantorum in Basle.
Roderick Swanston is joined by Wenzinger's colleagues and students to pay tribute to the man who married musicianship and musicology. Including
Erlebach Suite in C
Purcell A selection of viol fantasias
Monteverdi Orfeo (excerpt) Bach Cello Suite No 6 in D,
BWV1012
Marais Sujet Diversify in G
Handel Brockes Passion (excerpt) Marais Alcyone (excerpt) Discs. Repeat

A performance of Puccini's first success, which enters the world of the French demimonde. Manon, a forerunner of the tart with a heart, is manipulated by her scheming brother Lescaut but falls for the dashing
Chevalier des Grieux. She comes to a sticky end in, of all places, the Louisiana desert, in a real tear-jerker of a finale. Glyndebourne's new production, directed by Graham Vick , and conducted by John Eliot
Gardiner, is the first time the opera has been presented there.
Glyndebourne Chorus, London Philharmonic, conductor John Eliot Gardiner
Acts 1 and 2 8.40 During the interval, Graham Vick and John Eliot Gardiner , the producer and conductor of tonight's Manon Lescaut , discuss their approach to the opera.
